BONUS: Check out some step-by-step techniques by Microsoft by following the link in the resources section below.
Step 1
DEFRAGMENT!
According to Microsoft "Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up."
Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools >Disk Defragmenter.
Step 2
FREE UP DISK SPACE
Get rid of all that old junk by using this built in Windows tool.
Go to Start> >All Programs> Accessories >System Tools >Disk Cleanup
Step 3
REPAIR DISK ERRORS
It takes too long to explain... I recommend just doing it...
Close all open files.
Go to Start > My Computer > right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors > click Properties > click the Tools tab > Click Check Now> select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box > click Start.
Step 4
REMOVE SPYWARE
XP Service pack 2 and Vista have a built in service, but don't discount Norton or Mcafee.
Step 5
BOOST YOUR MEMORY
One last tip, max out your RAM. It won't make your machine start up faster, but one you have several programs open, you'll really see the difference! Plus RAM (Computer Memory) is cheap!)
Drive maintenance is crucial to system performance. Defragmenting is very effortless and efficient with Diskeeper automatic. Its the best program I have tried so far which needs no manual input. I also like CCleaner for cleanups.
